Fundraising campaign to improve food security in Boa Vista village

Just before Christmas 2024 an invasive species of larvae consumed the entire crop of manioc in the Jordão area (Acre, Brazil). Tragically the manioc is the main food source of the local Indigenous communities and thus this has profound consequences for their food security in the near future. AjanUni having a special connection to the area, we decided to set up a fundraiser campaign to support the Huni Kuin families, friends and allies in the Boa Vista village.

The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather disasters such as floods, droughts and fires experienced in the area during the past couple of years are all impacts of climate change. Communities that are already struggling with a shortage of food are now in an even more precarious situation. Livelihoods of the Indigenous people in the Amazon are particularly vulnerable to consequences of the anthropogenic environmental crisis.

As privileged inhabitants of the Global North, who have benefited from a process of modernization which, in addition to our welfare states, has produced inequality in its various forms and is the main cause of global climate crisis, we see supporting Indigenous community of Boa Vista also as a question of climate justice. Together we are exploring new ways of adapting to these unpredictably changing circumstances and are trying to find new creative solutions to strengthen the resilience of local communities. Finding sustainable solutions not dependent on long-term external support aims to secure the self-determination of the Indigenous communities.

The campaign aims to raise funds for building a Casa de Farinha at Boa Vista village, so that they can prepare manioc flour (farinha) to help them through the upcoming 6 months before the next harvest will be ready. The possibility to prepare farinha will support them also in future crises and can bring addition financial resources to help them access other resources that they need to safeguard their traditional livelihood.

We welcome and appreciate any donations to support our project. Even a small amount matters. And if you feel to spread the word, we thank you for that too. The link to our fundraiser:
